The Douglas clan originates from lowlands of Scotland and was one of the most powerful clans in the country covering the entire south of Scotland. The clan were supporters of the Scottish crown throughout the uprisings and fought alongside William Wallace. The current heir to the chiefdom is also the duke of Hamilton, however with the surname 'douglas-hamilton' he is unable to claim the title 'chief' as the ancient rules of the clan state that only a surname with the singular name 'Douglas' can claim to be chief.
